Miami sewists: stay tuned for booking dates and location details!

No two sewists need exactly the same help.
That's why my private sewing classes aren't built around a predetermined curriculum. Instead, we'll focus on your skill level, your project and your sewing goals.
Never used a sewing machine before? We can start there.
Bought a sewing pattern and have absolutely no idea what you're looking at? Bring it.
Halfway through a dress and completely confused by the instructions? Let's figure it out together.
Want help fitting a garment to your body? We can work on that, too.
You don't need to commit to weeks of classes just to learn one skill. Book the time you need and we'll work together on what you want to learn.
What Can I Learn in a Private Sewing Lesson?
Your lesson can be customized around almost any project you're working on.
We can work on things like:
-
Sewing machine basics and troubleshooting
-
Reading and understanding sewing patterns
-
Choosing your sewing pattern size
-
Cutting fabric and patterns accurately
-
Understanding pattern instructions and terminology
-
Garment construction techniques
-
Zippers and buttonholes
-
Working with different types of fabric
-
Finishing techniques
-
Troubleshooting a project that's gone sideways
-
Getting started on your first handmade garment
And if you're thinking, “I don't even know what I need help with,” that's okay too. We can figure that out together.
Beginner Sewing Classes In Miami
You do not need any sewing experience to take a private lesson.
If you've always wanted to learn how to sew but aren't sure where to begin, we'll start with the basics and move at your pace.
I can help you become comfortable using your sewing machine, understand the tools and terminology you'll encounter, and begin building the skills you'll need to eventually sew your own clothes.
There is no expectation that you already know what you're doing.
That's what the lesson is for!
Already Know How to Sew? Bring Me Your Problem Project.
Private sewing lessons aren't only for beginners.
-
Maybe you've been sewing for years but can't figure out why a garment isn't fitting correctly.
-
Maybe your pattern instructions make absolutely no sense.
-
Maybe you've avoided invisible zippers your entire sewing life and have finally decided it's time.
-
Maybe just have a glimpse of an idea and need help seeing it come to life.
Bring your project, pattern or sewing problem with you and we'll work through it together.
Sometimes you don't need an entire sewing course. You just need another sewist sitting next to you saying, “Okay, here's what they're asking you to do.”
One-on-One Private Sewing Lessons
I primarily teach one-on-one sewing lessons because individualized instruction gives us the freedom to spend our time where you actually need it.
There's no keeping up with the rest of a class.
There's no waiting while everyone else finishes a step.
And there's no worrying that you're asking too many questions.
If something takes five minutes for you to understand, we move on.
If we need to spend 30 minutes figuring out why your pants are doing that weird thing, that's what we do.
Want to learn with a friend?
Two-person lessons are also available, so grab your sewing bestie and learn together.
How long is a sewing lesson?
Private sewing lessons are available in one-hour and two-hour sessions.
A one-hour lesson can work well when you have a specific skill or problem you want to tackle. They are the perfect amount of time to learn how to thread your new (or old) sewing machine.
For beginners, fitting help, or working through a larger garment project, a two-hour session usually gives us more time to sew without feeling rushed.
Not sure how much time you'll need? Choose the option that feels right—we can always schedule another session if we need more time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know how to sew before taking a class?
Not at all! Complete beginners are welcome. We can start with sewing machine basics and build from there.
Are these group sewing classes?
No. My private sewing lessons are designed primarily for one student at a time so the lesson can be completely customized around you. Two-person lessons are also available if you'd like to learn with a friend.
Do you teach garment sewing?
Yes! Garment sewing is my specialty. If your goal is to learn how to sew your own clothes, understand garment patterns, improve construction skills or get a better fit, you're in the right place.
Can I bring a sewing project I'm already working on?
Absolutely. In fact, I encourage it! Bring your project, pattern and any materials you have. We can troubleshoot where you're stuck and work through the next steps together.
Can you help me fit a sewing pattern?
Yes. We can work through common fitting issues and pattern adjustments during a private lesson. If fitting is your primary goal, having your pattern and/or a partially constructed garment or muslin with you can help us make the most of our time.
Do I need my own sewing machine?
Specific equipment requirements will depend on the Miami teaching location and type of lesson. Full details will be provided when Miami bookings open.
Where are the sewing classes located?
Inside the Hem is relocating from Charlotte, North Carolina to Miami, Florida in November 2026. Private lessons will be offered in the Miami area. Exact location information will be announced once the new teaching space is finalized.
When will Miami sewing classes be available?
Miami-area lessons are expected to begin soon after the November 2026 relocation. Join the Inside the Hem email list to be notified when booking opens.
