Budget Sewing Hack: How Back-to-School Sales Save Me Money on Notions

When most people think of back-to-school sales, they picture backpacks, notebooks, and rows of pencils. But if you’re a sewist, this season isn’t just about school supplies—it’s the perfect time to stock up on sewing notions without blowing your budget...a perfect budget sewing hack!

Product images of each of the back to school supplies that could double as a sewing notion.

That’s right—many of the things we use in the sewing room are hiding in the school supply aisle. And the best part? They’re often a fraction of the price compared to “official” sewing tools.

Here are some of my favorite back-to-school supplies that double as sewing notions:

1. Pocket Folders for PDF Patterns

Printed PDF patterns can quickly turn into a messy pile. Pocket folders (the kind kids use for homework) are the perfect size for organizing and storing them. Bonus: they come in cute colors so you can color-code your projects.

2. Rulers for Pattern Alterations

School supply rulers are just as effective as “sewing rulers” when it comes to making pattern adjustments, checking seam allowances, or adding length. Grab a couple during back-to-school season and you’ll always have one handy.

3. Tape for Indie Patterns

If you sew indie PDF patterns, you already know how quickly tape disappears. Stock up now when tape is dirt cheap, and you’ll never have to scramble mid-project again.

4. Chalk for Marking Fabric

Sidewalk chalk? Yep—it works! Or grab classroom chalk sticks to mark darts, pleats, or fold lines. They brush right off and cost pennies compared to fancy tailor’s chalk.

5. Binder Clips for Heavy Fabrics

Forget expensive sewing clips—binder clips from the office aisle are perfect for holding layers of denim, canvas, or leather together without leaving pin marks.

I’ve rounded up all my favorite “back-to-school” sewing notions in one easy Amazon list. That way you can stock up while prices are low, without running from store to store.

I am a firm believer that sewing doesn’t have to be expensive, and this budget sewing hack is a perfect example. With a little creativity (and a stroll through the school supply aisle), you can stretch your sewing budget and still have all the tools you need to make something beautiful.

So next time you see “back-to-school” sales, don’t walk past them—lean in. Because for sewists, this season is really about going back to what we love most: sewing.
