Fern - fabric choice and the Ruffles

When I did the pocket, I realized fabric choice makes a huge impact on the ruffles. They are double thickness, not cut on the bias, and then gathered to half their length. The pattern calls for linen, probably 3-5oz range. I used muslin, and gathering it to double (half the original length) makes it VERY thick, and even stiff. Rayon challis probably isn't as much of a problem. I cut back on the length for the pocket, and it is STILL pretty stiff. I'm going to try various things on the hem ruffle, but a more standard amount of gather is 1.5 rather than 2, so I will be using that as a starting point. I don't mind this being a little quirky, but I do want to like it when it's done, and I don't think the original design intent was for the ruffle to be stiff. Hope thi…

Thank for the tip on fabric use. I was toggling between fabric types, you just helped a lot.

Fern dress asymetrical hem

Hello folks, I am at the point of cutting the section off of the length to make the asymetrical hem and I'm thinking about maybe making it a little less dramatic but afraid that would defeat the point. Anyone else going through a debate like that? Anyone have suggestions on how to decide? I'm going to try pinning it and see what it looks like. I don't know if we are allowed to ask questions like this . . . Thanks folks!

Yes, I’ve been pondering this same question. I decided to go for it though because it’s out of my comfort zone, lol

I lean towards symmetry but I’m up for the challenge.

Best wishes 👍

Printing Core Tee Pattern

I printed out my pattern for the Core Tee, but it seems like it may be off from the layout in the instructions. I printed as I normally print patterns.

Did you print yours in landscape orientation? I'm working with size 8 and the very first page doesn't have any pattern on it, but it shows something should be there on the layout page.

Any help is much appreciated!

I got it! 😁 Thank you ladies for your help. My printer was not set to Auto orientation, so it printed incorrectly. I just reprinted (using the other side of the wrongly printed pages) and it looks to all be there now!

February - Closet Core Tee Shirt - neckline alternative

HI there,

Because I hardly ever wear anything with a crew neckline, I was wondering about adaptind the 'core teeshirt' to have a scoop neck. Then I found that Closet Core patterns also offer a free pattern for a tee with a scoop neckline, also intended for knit fabric. It's here: https://closetcorepatterns.com/products/plantain-t-shirt-free-pattern?_pos=1&_sid=20a6b6245&_ss=r

Also, Seamwork, propose a teeshirt pattern for woven fabrics: https://www.seamwork.com/pdf-sewing-patterns/hansie-easy-woven-t-shirt

While I don't think I'd make more than one, the comparison of the patterns could be interesting. Presumably, the pattern for woven fabric would have more ease to compensate for the lack of stretch.

You have some great ideas. I've made Seamwork's Hansie tee from a bedsheet fabric just as a trial and I surprised myself at how often I grabbed it to wear all summer.

Question

I have a really quick question. Can I take the short sleeve and add it to the longer t-shirt (B)? Thanks :)

Februari challenge twist

Did print the core shirt pattern. My size is really petite. The model is way too oversized. Luckily I do have more basic patterns for t-shirts. Going to try one or more of those this month.

Dush pant

Finnally got the PDF together. Did all the adjustments. I cut a 4x I did not have to many adjustments to the pattern. I mesured the papper pattern and compared them to my measurements. I was pleasently surprised because usually I have to make tons of adjustments as a plus size petite woman. I did cut off 6 inches the bottom. I may plut a casing and elastic on the hem at the ankle. I decide to make my first pair from a tee-shirt top sheet as a wearable muslin. My fashion fabric is this red french terry sweatshirt fabric. Medium wieght with 35% streatch. I used a pants panter that I adjusted to compare for fit.

Ready to go!

Hi all! I'm just getting started on my Dash Sweatpants. I got the pattern printed at PDF Plotting. I'm leaning into the luxury lounge-wear idea and using Ultra Plush Double Brushed Organic Fleece fabric that I got from Stylemaker during their end of bolt Winter sale. I picked up all of my notions (elastic, grommets and draw string) from Stylemaker, too. Based on my measurements, I'm cutting a size L. Wish me luck! 😬🤞

Pattern issue

Did my last post not go through? I’m having problems seeing how my pattern pieces fit together. I am using AO printing and the pattern pieces are different from those on the copy paper. I need some help but I don’t see my post with pictures.

Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding, did you have the A0 printed commercially? If you're printing at home, it would help to use the A4, (the print-at-home), option rather than A0, (which is optimized for very large sheets of paper). I hope this helps.

Prepping

Pattern printed and ready for assembly.

I have a few alterations in mind which will be an absolute first for me... Will let you know how it goes.

Hoping to do a trip to the fabric store in a few days as we don't have online shopping options where I live.

Itching to get started!!!

January 'Dash' pants - fitting: length alteration

Hi There,

I have only made one alteration to my pattern so far, which is to lengthen the legs. I noticed that in the instructions, they advise us to cut and insert in two places on the leg, while the pattern itself only has one alteration line (mid-thigh).

Now, these are pretty straight-legged pants to start with, but there is a slight taper and I'm guessing that making two small additions (thigh and calf) rather than one big one would maintain the overall pant leg shape better. What I'm risking doing here is making the pant leg baggier lower down than intended.

Although I guess it hardly matters with sweatpants, this is an interesting point for less forgiving designs I might do later.

If you are only lengthening an inch or even 2, like you, I don’t think it’ll matter.
